“Literary express”

 

On April, 24 in the framework of the IV St.Petersburg Book Salon-2009 the action named “Literary express” took place. The famous St. Petersburg writers Michael Kuraev, Valery Popov, Sergei Nosov and Alexander Kushner guided a tour for St. Petersburg literary places for the foreign guests, participants of the Book Salon.

 

The excursion turned out to be really international. “Literary express” was attended by Swedish delegation including Petr Kurman, the poet and public figure, Yanina Orlov, Head of the Baltic Council of Writers, specialist on children’s literature, professor of Stockholm University; Polish delegation headed by Gjegorsh Guzovski, President of Warsaw Book Fair: Israeli writer Alex Tarn; Mark Sagnol, Head of Book Division of the Department for Cooperation and Culture at the Embassy of France in Russia, German delegation including Ksenia Ryklina, Director of Moscow-based Goethe Center projects.

 

The Bulgarian delegation, namely, Maria Stankova, the famous Bulgarian writer, poet, play and script writer; Mitko Novkov, cultural scientist, writer of political essays, literary critic and journalist; the prosaic Palmi Ranchev and the poet Silvia Choleva, was the honorary guest of both the Book Salon -2009 and “Literary express”.

 

The bus excursion was conducted in English and Russian.

 

The bus left the 7th Pavilion of LenExpo and went along Bolshoi prospect of Vasilevsky island stopping near St. Andrew’s cathedral. This part of excursion was performed by the writer Michael Kuraev. After the surprise-stop at the Spit of Vasilievsky island where the guests were offered a glass of champagne Kuraev introduced his colleague and passed microphone to Valery Popov who told the guests about literary sights of Nevsky prospect from the Palace square to Krylov’s house in Sadovaya street, then Sergei Nosov told about Dostoevsky’s places. The bus stopped in Sennaya square, went along Stolyarny pass and Pod’yacheskaya street. The participants of “Literary express” saw Raskol’nikov’s house, entered the door where Dostoevsky’s hero murdered the old moneylender. The next stop was the House of Writers in Zvenigorodskaya street, recently opened in rooms of old sawing workshops, here the guests were welcomed following the best traditions of Russian hospitality. After the House of Writers the bus passed along Dvortsovaya embankment, near Tavrichesky palace, went around Tavrichesky garden and stopped near Smolny cathedral. The story about these sights belonged to the famous St. Petersburg poet Alexander Kushner. In Smolny cathedral the participants listened to parts of the concerto commemorating victims of the Armenian genocide. The last destination was the art-café “Brodyachaya sobaka”, here the guests were welcomed by Vladimir Sklyarsky, Director of legendary place, finally the participants got the opportunity for informal conversation.

 

All the excursion was accompanied by police escort. Michael Kuraev noted that such honor for representatives of literature is quite unusual.

 

The International Association “Live classics” together with Russian Book Union with the support of Administration of St. Petersburg were the organizers of this event.
