International Forum “Empire. Four dimensions of Andrei Bitov”
Trip to Bitov’s places in St. Petersburg October, 2 For Bitov St. Petersburg “is such a book in which a man appears as a literary character as well as a heir of Petersburg line of Russian literature”, “these are stony pages”. On October, 2 an old bus as if just left the pages of Bitov’s story with the same name traveled along the “Stony pages” of the Northern capital. The bus crossed the bridge from which the character of Bitov’s story fell down, followed the route of Tonya, the character of the story “Big ball”, participants of the trip saw the house which hosted the cinema where Bitov’s character shirked lessons, a small flat where the story “View of Troya sky” took place, a bridge where a horse from the story “Loafer” stumbled and fell down, a stadium where Zaytsev from “Foot” broke his foot, a school where he studied. The bus stopped near famous house № 6 in Aptekarsky island where Bitov and his characters had been living for the most part of their life.
The trip culmination implied the visit of Botanical garden, the paradise of childhood for Bitov’s characters and the starting point of their life. Bitov used to repeat that he had built houses, had brought up children but hadn’t planted a tree. Director Maxim Gureev proposed to fill this gap: Bitov planted his tree in a greenhouse of his native Botanical garden.
